A head start into the future

Teacher Academy

About

Beginning during in their junior year of high school, academy students spend two years together in four different classes. Teachers at Robert Louis Stevenson and Dianne Feinstein Elementary schools serve as mentors for our students when they volunteer weekly in their classrooms.

During the summer between their junior and senior year, Academy students work in paid internships in SFUSD middle schools. They are placed with mentor teachers and work with middle school students who have scored below basic and far below basic in on standardized tests in mathematics. They also attend class at City College San Francisco and earn three college units in Secondary Supervised Instruction. Through their experiences in their classes and in their internships, students gain first hand knowledge of what it is like to be a teacher.

For two years students bond and grow together which allows them the safety and support to meet and realize their greatest potential. Student experiences in the Teacher Academy focus mostly on career exploration. For many students, this will be their first experience working with children. Upon graduation from the Teacher Academy and passage of the CBEST, students are eligible for positions as paraprofessionals in SFUSD.

Career Opportunities

The Teacher's Academy program works very closely with the Human Resources Department at SFUSD. Teacher Academy students are given the opportunity to apply for the Paraprofessional to teacher program.

The San Francisco Paraprofessional to Teacher Program (PTTP) is a collaborative program involving the district (SFUSD), the union (UESF), and the colleges (San Francisco State University and City College of San Francisco). PTTP goals are to recruit and support paraprofessionals to become credentialed, exemplary teachers in the District's high need areas of Special Education and Secondary Mathematics, Science, BCLAD teachers.

PTTP has placed over 156 teachers in SFUSD as classroom teachers. Currently, four program graduates have become SFUSD administrators, and 78% are serving as classroom teachers. Over 77% of these teachers are of ethnic or language minorities, similar to the District's diverse student population.
